  3. ITU Turns On Gopher Server

  7. [The International Telecommunication Union is the world's
  8. Geneva-based international body for telecom carriers.  It
  9. coordinates radio spectrum use, develops telecom standards
  10. (formerly known as CCITT standards), promotes telecom
  11. development activity, and exchanges information on these
  12. matters. --ed]

  14. The new Gopher-based version of the ITU Telecom Information 
  15. Exchange Services (ITU TIES) is now available.  It offers major 
  16. improvements in ease of use, information access and delivery, 
  17. information contents and world-wide connectivity.
  18.  
  19. TIES offers open access to numerous ITU information resources: 
  20. ITUDOC (e.g., information on Study Groups activities, full texts of 
  21. some Recommendations), content retrieval infobases (e.g., Status of 
  22. ITU-T Recommendations), directories (e.g., ITU Global Directory), 
  23. etc.  It also provides access to some information from other United 
  24. Nations organizations (e.g., Development Activities).  No 
  25. registration is needed to access the TIES open services.

  27. Members of the global telecommunications community can apply for a 
  28. TIES account which gives access to further information resources 
  29. (e.g., tariffs database), other telecom-related information 
  30. services (e.g., ETSI bulletin board) and information exchange tools 
  31. (e.g., e-mail, Internet tools, free MCI Mail account).

  33. The TIES interactive Gopher client can be accessed via Telnet 
  34. <info.itu.ch>, dial-up (+41 22 733 7575) and X.25 (#228468111112).

  36. Log with 'gopher' to access the TIES open services.  The ITU Gopher 
  37. is also accessible from the main US and European Gophers under 
  38. "International Organizations". The link file used is:

  43. Please check document "What is ITU TIES?" (under option 1 on main 
  44. menu) for information on the services provided and conditions for 
  45. obtaining a TIES account.  There are no charges for the use of 
  46. TIES.  Some classes of users need a subscription to access the 
  47. ITU/LYNX tariffs database.
